Food Security Debate, University of Tsukuba

Global Food Security

Today is the final presentation of our Ph.D. debate course in Global Food Security partnership program, University of Tsukuba.This special course held for Monbukagakusho student funding by MEXT scholarship in Global Food Security partnership program. The professor in this course is Prof. Makoto Watanabe.  Before the final presentation, we get the course in ten times with another professor in University Tsukuba and outside.

This course gives us (Ph.D. student) more perspective about Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) and global perspective about food security and related issues in the world. This makes me learn more motivated me to improve my capability to solve many kinds of problem-related to life and environmental science included agriculture. There are many issues related to food security.

Food security: when all people at all times have physical and economic access to sufficient food to meet their dietary needs for a productive and healthy life.

Food security has three dimensions:

  1. AVAILABILITY of sufficient quantities of food of appropriate quality, supplied through domestic production or imports;
  2. ACCESS by households and individuals to adequate resources to acquire appropriate foods for a nutritious diet; and
  3. UTILIZATION of food through adequate diet, water, sanitation, and health care. (United States Department of Agriculture, 1996, p. 2)

Availability

Availability is not only about the production system but there are a lot of dimensions related to food security. As we know, there is some people hunger, while another people in another place or country obesity. There are several conditions in some country related to availability issues:

  1. If we don’t have agricultural resources and have Money, we can buy from another country if we have money. This is in the condition of diplomatic among related country is good.
  2. But the problem is if we don’t have resources and don’t have enough money to buy?
  3. another problem: we have agricultural resources but a lack of knowledge. We need big effort to change farmer knowledge to grow and make agricultural production more effectively.
  4. Then, another problem is a political issue and new colonialism-related to food availability. The Rich country can cultivated food in developing country and pay a more cheap price. But, in another side developing country is still poor. Un equality relationship among developing country and developed country.

Food Access

How about food ACCESS in your country? Food can be access by households and individuals to adequate resources to acquire appropriate foods for a nutritious diet. In poor society they can’t access food to supply their life.

Food Utilization

Related to food utilization through adequate diet, water, sanitation, and health care. Adequate diet is very important issues. In some country obesity is the main problem, but in another country hunger is the problem. How to make relation and good food sharing around the world is more populous issues in the future.

How about water availability? many researcher reported that water sortage in the world. Reducing good quality of water is important issues too in developed or developing country.

Solution

  1. Food security is not the only problem for developing country but developed country too. Collaboration among country to share resources and make equality collaboration to supply food in the future.
  2. Intensification strategy is more important because Agricultural land is limited and can’t extend.
  3. Improving biotechnology to application to improve yield and productivity.
  4. Improving farmer knowledge related to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP).
